PURPOSE:To enable overlapping characters etc. to represent in a half tone or in a free form by picking up an image to be overlapped by a two-dimensional solid-state image sensor and obtaining a static video signal and synthesizing the static video signal with an animation image signal. CONSTITUTION:A synchronizing signal is isolated from the animation image signal which represents images to be overlapped by a synchronizing signal separating circuit 1. The separated synchronizing signal is inputted to a read control circuit 3 which drives the two-dimensional solid-state image sensor 2. Images to be overlapped (image of image carrying member 7) are focused on the image sensor 2. Thus, a static image is read by the control of the above mentioned control circuit 3, and is synthesized with the animation image signal at a synthesizing circuit 4.
