PURPOSE:To facilitate preparation by rolling-working a shifting-body guiding shaft which has a plurality of spiral grooves on the outer peripheral surface and is suitable for the character printing-head guide mechanism of a small-sized printer and grinding-working the top surface of the bulging-out part on the upper edge surface of each groove formed during the rolling work so as to form a slidable contact surface. CONSTITUTION:Two continuous spiral grooves 7 and 8 are formed at a same time through rolling work from the right edge to the left edge on the outer peripheral surface of a character printing-head guide shaft 6. As for the bulging- out parts 7 and 8 formed on the upper-edge surfaces of the grooves 7 and 8 during rolling work, the top surfaces are ground flat to the outside diameter D2, and the ground surfaces 7b and 8b are formed. In this case, R-curved surfaces 7e and 8e are left outside the extension lines 7d and 8d downwardly from the ground surfaces 7b and 8b and upwardly form the side wall surfaces 7c and 8c. The ground surfaces 7b and 8b are allowed to act as the slidable contact surfaces with the inner surface of a shifting body.
