PURPOSE:To obtain the titled fiber having high tenacity and modulus, and excellent wet heat resistance, by spinning an acrylonitrile copolymer obtained by copolymerizing a specific amount of methacrylonitrile and heat-treating the fiber in dry hot atmosphere under specific condition. CONSTITUTION:An acrylonitrile copolymer composed of (A) acrylonitrile, (B) 0.5-10wt% methacrylonitrile, and (C) 0-5wt% vinyl monomer copolymerizable with the component A, is spun by wet or dry-spinning process. The obtained fiber is washed with water, drawn, dried, and subjected to the high-temperature dry-heat treatment under tension at 150-250 deg.C, preferably under elongation of <=5% at 180-220 deg.C to obtain the objective fiber having a single filament strength of >=6g/d and initial elastic modulus of >=850kg/mm<2>.
