The invention relates to a device for protecting vehicles against theft by making driving impossible for all those vehicles which are equipped therewith. It consists of two hollow cylindrical pieces, A at the base of the steering wheel and B fixed to the steering column. The piece A which, in turn, is fixed to the inside of B, receives in its hollow portion a safety lock 9 and a locking mechanism driven by the latter. This mechanism, consisting of a cam 5 pierced with two slots and two lock bolts 7, couples A and B when the lock bolts 7 penetrate the catches 19 cut into B, therefore rotation of the steering wheel drives the steering column. Conversely, when the lock bolts 7 are withdrawn from the catches 19, the column is not driven, the steering wheel being free to rotate. <IMAGE>
