In a side seam coated tinplate welded can, the inner and outer surface portions of the side seam have an outermost layer of oxide 50 - 400 Angstroms thick and an intermediate layer of Fe-Sn alloy of thickness 5 - 100% of that of the total Sn layer. A resin(compsn.) is coated on the inner or outer surfaces of the side seam and contains a carbonyl, hydroxyl, ether, or epoxy polar gp. at a concn. of 10 - 2000 millimoles/100g. The resin is pref. thermosetting compsn. with a methyl ethyl ketone swelling elasticity of 1 x 10 power 4 - 1 x 10 power 8 dyne/cm2, a softening print of 50 - 300 deg.C as measured in the ring and ball method, and a density of 1.10 - 1.35 g/cc.
