PURPOSE:To produce the titled dextrin useful as a blood coagulation inhibiting agent, etc., in large quantities, at a low cost, in a short time, by reacting dextrin with an etherification agent in the presence of an alkali using an aqueous solution of ethyl alcohol as a reaction medium. CONSTITUTION:The objective carboxymethyl dextrin is produced by reacting dextrin with an etherification agent (e.g. monochloroacetic acid) in the presence of an alkali (e.g. NaOH), using an aqueous solution of ethyl alcohol having a concentration of usually 70-85wt%, as the reaction medium. The amount of the alcohol solution is preferably 2-15pts.wt. per 1pt.wt. of the dextrin. EFFECT:The effective utility ratio of the etherification agent can be improved remarkably from 5-40% of the conventional method to 65-90%. The etherification can be carried out at high temperature (60-80 deg.C), and the reaction can be completed in a short time.
