PURPOSE:To ensure detection of leak, by a method wherein an incoming quantity Qin and an outgoing quantity Qout are hourly measured at the whole outlets and inlets of a gas pipe line, and gas leak is detected from the measured data. CONSTITUTION:An incoming quantity Qin and an outgoing quantity Qout are hourly measured at the whole outlets and inlets of a gas pipe line 1, and the measured incoming quantity Qin and the outgoing quantity Qout are respectively integrated for a given time. When a total sum SIGMAintegral Qdt of the integrated values is deviated from a given value, it is decided to be gas leak, in which case, from data obtained from computation, a relation between integral indt-integral Qoutdt/integral Qindt and standard deviation in relation to an integrating time is computed. From the relation, an integrating time T to a leak amount to be detected is determined, time integration is performed for plural times commencing with a point of time being staggered each one integral number-th of the integrated time, and at a point of time when each integrated time attains T, it is decided to leak.
