Moulding sand containing mixtures of used sand containing organic and inorganic binding agents is divided up into fine particles and purified in a dry state by rebound action and/or rubbing grain against grain, and is subjected to heat treatment with subsequent dry final cleaning, in which separated sludge substances are removed from the regenerated material by means of a gas flow. An apparatus for performing the method comprises a rotating drum 5, 46, 107 and/or a centrifuge cleaner 102 for pre-cleaning, a kiln 9, 51, 108 with a fluidized bed for thermal regeneration and another rotating drum 10, 59, 109 and/or another centrifuge cleaner 151 for final cleaning. These parts of the apparatus are accommodated in a plurality of container-like vessels I-IX, which can be mounted one on top of another. <IMAGE>
