PURPOSE:To produce a significant corrosion inhibiting effect on various metals in an alkaline environment by adding a monohydric alcohol having a specified number of carbon atoms. CONSTITUTION:5-30C, preferably 8-24C monohydric alcohol selected among all the monohydroxyhydrocarbons except phenols such as hydroxynaphthalene is dissolved in an aqueous alkali soln. of >=9pH in which a metal forming amphoteric oxide such as zinc or tin or an alloy there of its present. The amount of the monohydric alcohol dissolved is about 10<-4>-1mol/l, and 1-decanol, 6- octadecanol, 4-propyl-4-heptanol, 8-octadecenyl-1-alcohol or 3-phenyl-1-propanol may be used as the monohydric alcohol. A significant corrosion inhibiting effect is produced on various metals, especially zinc. |
