A traction machine for an elevator comprises a reduction gear enclosed within a main housing, and input and output shafts together with parallel shaft gears. A traction sheave is connected to the output shaft and an electric motor is connected to the input shaft. The machine also has a brake gear and a flywheel. The brake gear and the flywheel are arranged on the same side of the gear housing as the traction sheave, and a peripheral portion of one of the surfaces of at least one of the above elements faces a peripheral portion of one of the side surfaces of the traction sheave.
