PURPOSE:An antitumor agent comprising a triterpene compound as an active ingredient. CONSTITUTION:An natitumor agent containing a compound (e.g., thyrsiferol, etc.) shown by the formula (R is H, or acetyl) as an active ingredient. Powder, emulsion, solution, capsule, etc. may be used as the dosage form, and the antitumor agent is administered by injection, medicine for internal use, suppository, etc. The compound shown by the formula as the active ingredient can be extracted and isolatd from Laurencia obtusa, marine algae, and especially preferable thyrsiferol is obtained by immersing Laurencia obtusa in a hydropohilic organic solvent (e.g., emthanol, etc.), dehydrating it, exchanging the solvent for a new hydrophilic organic solvent, immersing it in the organic solvent for >=1 week to give an extract, adsorbing it on a nonpolar adsorbent and purifying it.
