The invention provides a method for the production of a multi-groove V-belt pulley made of sheet metal, which has a circular base 3 which merges into a cup-shaped groove part 5, 6, 7. During this process, an essentially cup-shaped preform with a uniform thickness corresponding to the thickness of the circular base 3 is first of all produced. A conical form widening outwards away from the circular base 3 is imparted to a section 6 of the preform in the cup-shaped groove part. The preform is clamped fast in a chuck, the mandrel 8 used for the deforming process having a conical contact surface 11 and being arranged opposite a smoothing roller 15. By pressing this smoothing roller 15 against the mandrel 8, the section 6 is deformed in such a way that the cross-section situated at the base 3 is thickened and the cross-section decreases in a constant fashion towards the outside. Flanges corresponding to sections 4, 5 and 7 are formed integrally on both sides of the groove part corresponding to section 6. <IMAGE>
