PURPOSE:To decrease the time needed for communication procedures and to reduce the communication cost by inhibiting switching to the 2nd MODEM means in a protocol mode between originals in case plural originals undergo the picture communication in the same communication mode. CONSTITUTION:A switch circuit 5 performs switching between a control signal MODEM6 and a picture signal MODEM7 by the MODEM switching instruction signal outputted from a central controller 1 via a signal line (f). Then the circuit 5 sets a signal line SED at an H level with reception of a binary signal of 300bps and a picture signal and then at an L level when both said signals are not received respectively. An MODEM of a facsimile device is switched to the MODEM7 when the pre-procedure of communication is over and then to the MODEM6 only when the binary signal of 300bps is received. Thus the control signals such as MPS, EOM and EOP can be omitted. This reduces the protocol of picture communication.
