Reference half cell for a cathodic protection system for steel in reinforced concrete

The half cell comprises a silver wire electrode 10, one of whose ends 12 is embedded in a mass of fused silver chloride 14. Its other end is connected to the central conductor 16 of a screened cable 18. A protective electrically insulating sleeve 20 encases the junction between the electrode and the conductor. The electrode, the silver chloride and the sleeve are preferably potted in a mass of chloride- containing cement grout 26 and this grout is encased within a gas-and- liquid-permeable membrane 28.
