NEW MATERIAL:A compound of formula I [R1 is hydrocarbon group which may be substituted; Ar is formula II (X, Y are H, halogen, alkoxy), formula III (A is O, S, NR; R is H, alkyl); R2 is alkylene; R3 is H, hydrocarbon group which may be substituted]. EXAMPLE:alpha'-Methyl-benzylidene-gamma-methoxypropylamine. USE:A starting substance of herbicides: it is used in the synthesis of N-substituted- chloroacetamide which has high herbicidal activity. PREPARATION:The reaction of an alcoholate of formula IV (M is alkali metal, alkaline earth metal; n is valency of M) with a compound of the formula: R3Z' (Z' is halogen, -OSO3R3) gives a Schiff base of formula I. The compound of the formula: R3Z' is methyl chloride or methyl bromide and the reaction is carried out in an organic solvent such as ether or THF.
