PURPOSE:To make appropriate transmission even when a transmitted original causes positional deviation by detecting changes in width of a continuous original and after storing the picture information of the original in a storage unit, transmitting this as picture information of the original of next page. CONSTITUTION:When a controlling section 11 detected a transmitted original that caused positional deviation during transmission by changes in state of output signals of sensors 6, 7, 8, sends out a message termination signal and a control return signal to the remote unit and interrupts transmission of the message at that time, and completes transmission of the page. On the other hand, the transmitted original that caused positional deviation is shifted on a contact glass 4 by paper feeding rollers 2 and carrying rollers 3, and the transmitted picture is read by a reading section 10. The controlling section 11 accumulates the picture information once in an accumulating section 12. When accumulation is over, picture information accumulated in the accumulating section 12 is read out as picture information of the next page (transmitted original), and outputted to a code compressing section 13. At this time, information of deviated width is outputted from an original width setting section 16, and the code compressing section 13 executes code compression corresponding to the width.
