PURPOSE:To lower a consumed power for detecting an outermost track by feeding power to an outer most track detecting means when a step signal counting value to a step motor for moving a carriage block is situated within a predetermined range. CONSTITUTION:A step signal from a host computer 1 is impressed, a movement of a carriage block section 5 is controlled through a driving circuit 9 and a positioning of a disk 3 of a magnetic head 4 to a desired track is performed. This step signal is also supplied to a counter 10 to increase and decrease a count value. When the count value goes to zero or a predetermined range, a changeover circuit 12 is controlled by a microprocessor 11, an electric power is suppied to an outermost track detecting means of a light emitting element and a photodetecting element 6, 7, an amplifier 8 and the like, and during detecting the outermost track a high level track 00 signal is outputted from a microprocessor 11. By a construction in which the electric power is supplied only during required, a consumed electric power for detecting the outermost track is lowered.
