OPTICAL MODULATING ELEMENT

PURPOSE:To realize an element for which accuracy is required with simple constitution by coupling directly a light transmittable element doped with a fluorescent agent to optical fibers and using the phosphor excited by the light introduced into the element. CONSTITUTION:The light transmittable element 3 is coupled between an optical fiber 1 on the light introducing side and the optical fiber 2 on the light exit side. The introduced light of a wavelength lambda1 and the light of the fluorescent wavelength lambda2 carrying the phosphor by the element 3 are simultaneously emitted to the fiber 2 and the light of the wavelength lambda2 is used in this case as the modulated output. The modulating element which is provided also with the simple connector function is thus realized by emitting the phosphor having the wavelength different from the wavelength of the introduced light by the luminescence effect of the element 3 when the element 3 is excited by the introduced light in the above-mentioned manner.
