To generate an image, at least two transparent single images (12,13) are arranged behind one another, in which the transparencies of the individual picture elements (21-25) are selected in such a manner that the mean value of the products of the transparencies of picture elements in each case located behind one another in the direction of viewing, over a number of adjacent picture elements, result in the transparency of the image to be generated. In this connection, the two single images can be completely independent of one another and of the image to be generated, which merely results in a certain restriction in the range of the transparency values. If the two single images are arranged at a certain distance behind one another, stereoscopic images can also be generated in this manner.
