PURPOSE:To prepare an optical waveguide easily without heating nor applying electric field by fitting a mask to a porous glass body prepd. by setting a soln. to gel a metal alcoholate and drying, and dipping the glass body in the soln. of a dopant. CONSTITUTION:A porous glass body 1 is formed by setting a soln. of metal alcoholate comprising at least one kind of metal alcoholate, water, and an alcoholic solvent such as methanol to gel, and drying the gel. A mask 2 having a desired pattern formed thereon is laid on the glass body 1, then the glass body with the mask is dipped in a dopant soln. 3 contg. atoms which elevate the refractive index of the glass. Further, the glass body 1 is dipped in an eluant 4 capable of eluting atoms. Atoms on the surface of the glass body 1 are eluted, and an optical waveguide is formed by removing the mask 2. By this method, optical waveguides are prepd. inexpensively with a simple device without dipping in a molten salt at high temp. for a long time nor requiring an apparatus for applying electric field. |
