PURPOSE:To correct the time base without deteriorating the S/N ratio or resolution in accordance with the detection output (later mentioned) by detecting the time base error of the reproduced output (formerly mentioned) from the horizontal synchronizing signal detected by means of a horizontal synchronizing signal detecting mean. CONSTITUTION:In the reproducing operation, the signal reproduced from a magnetic tape 17 undergoes a recording/reproducing switch 15, and is supplied to a reproduction processing circuit 18. The signal further undergoes processing of FM demodulation and de-emphasis, and is supplied to a time base correcting circuit 19 and a horizontal synchronizing signal detecting circuit 20. The circuit 20 identifies the inserting cycle of pseudo video signal in accordance with the signal SP that shows the revolutionary phase of the swivel head 16. The circuit 20 also takes out the horizontal synchronizing signal HD of the pseudo video signal by level detecting, and performs resetting by the output of this detection. The circuit 19 measures the time base error of the reproduced output by the signal HD detected by the circuit 20, and in accordance with the measurement result, corrects the time base of the reproduced output, and leads it to an output terminal 21.
