PURPOSE:To make the particle size of gel extremely fine and to improve the degree of resolution of an optical element by forming the optical element of colored liquid and a polymer capable of absorbing liquid at high temp. and desorbing the liq. at low temp. CONSTITUTION:An optical element is formed of a transparent substrate 1, etc., a gel-contg. layer 2, and a transparent protecting plate 3. A polymer capable of absorbing liquid at high temp. and desorbing the liquid at low temp. such as crosslinked polymer of acrylamide deriv. is used in the gel-contg. layer 2 as a mixture with the colored liquid. When the optical element is not irradiated with infrared rays, the gel 4-2 contracts, so light 6-2 is absorbed by the colored liquid and the color of the liquid is recognized. When the element is irradiated with infrared rays 5, the gel 4-1 swells and absorbs the colored liquid becoming light transmissive. By this method, an optical element having high degree of resolution is obtd. by using gel having extremely small particle size.
