PURPOSE:To eliminate the need for observing a changed-over position display device by providing a detent plate inhibiting the turning of a shift level from a range P to a range R and a stopper plate allowing the turning from a range D to a range N. CONSTITUTION:The shift lever 1 fitted turnably to a base plate 3 by a support shaft 4 is set selectively to a shift range position arranged in the order of P, R, N, D and 2L. A detent pin 9 is at the upward position when a pushbutton 16 is not depressed in the detent plate 10 fixed to the base plate 3 to inhibit the turning of the shift lever 1 from the range P to the range R. Further, when the pushbutton 16 is depressed, the stopper plate 20 inhibits the turning of the shift lever 1 from the range N to the range D and allows the reverse turning.
