PURPOSE:To obtain the titled composition having high coloring power, dichroic ratio, contrast and compatibility, and excellent stability and durability, by dissolving a specific anthraquinone-type dichroic blue dye in a nematic liquid crystal having positive dielectric anisotropy. CONSTITUTION:The objective composition can be prodoced by dissolving one or more anthraquinone dye of formula [R is (cyclo)alkyl or phenyl; X is -O- or -NH-] (e.g. 1,4-diamino-N-methyl-2-anthraquinonylcarboxamide) in a nematic liquid crystal having positive dielectric anisotropy.
