PURPOSE:To obtain a compound useful as a raw material for drugs, agricultural chemicals, etc., especially as a raw material for a chloroacetamide compound as a herbicide extremely easily in high yield, by reacting an alcoholate compound with an alkylating agent. CONSTITUTION:An alcoholate compound shown by the formula I (Ar is phenyl; R1 is alkylene; M is alkali metal, or alkaline earth metal; x is valence of M) is reacted with an alkylating agent shown by the formula R2X (R2 is hydrocarbon; X is halogen, group shown by the formula OSO3R2, or OCO2R2) in a solvent such as ether, etc., at -50-200 deg.C, preferably at 0-150 deg.C to give the aimed compound shown by the formula II. The reaction is carried out by using 1mol alcoholate compound and 0.01-100mol, preferably equimolar amount of the alkylating agent or a little excess mols of the alkylating agent. Methyl chloride, dimethyl sulfate, ethyl carbonate, etc., may be cited as the alkylating agent.
