PURPOSE:To enable the crystallization of any kind of molecule having a conjugated pi electron system subjected to high electron polarization without losing the SHG effect by crystallizing the molecule having an electron donating group and an electron accepting group at both terminals in a polar solvent. CONSTITUTION:A molecule having a conjugated pi electron system as a material for an org. and nonlinear optical material is a compound having a structure represented by formula 1 (where pi is benzene, naphthalene, anthracene, pyridine, stilbene, diphenylacetylene or a deriv. thereof, D is electron donating amino, dimethylamino, pyrrolidino, methoxy or a group analogous thereto, and A is electron accepting nitro, cyano, carbonyl or a group analogous thereto). The occurrence of reversal symmetry can be inhibited by crystallizing the molecule so that the dipoles are arranged as properly as possible. The molecule is crystallized under conditions which give priority to intermolecular interaction other than dipole-dipole bond, e.g., van der Waals force or intermolecular hydrogen bond as driving force for crystallization. |
