PURPOSE:To enable clear recognition of shape free from effects of harmful background of specimen and difference of surface reflection coefficient of each specimen, by picking up the image of the specimen from the detection roughly perpendicular to irradiating direction of light to the specimen. CONSTITUTION:An arrangement of ITV2 is so made that, for instance, the image of a step A of a U-shaped cylindrical pipe 1 is picked up. Next, a point light source 3 is positioned in a position where it is perpendicular to the direction connecting the ITV2 and the pipe 1 and facing the pipe 1. And a beam is irradiated on to a side surface of the pipe 1 from the source 3 and the image of the pipe 1 is picked up by the ITV2 arranged with the side surface located in front to pick-up an image signal. Next, the image signal thus taken is converted to digital signal with an A/D converter 4 for obtaining the picture element, and the picture element is stored in a variable density image memory 5. These stored data are subjected to shape recognition after introduction into such an output apparatus 7 as a TV monitor etc. through a calculating circuit 6. |
