For the purpose of obtaining chips of high quality virtually free of foreign substances while simultaneously prolonging the service life of the chip-removal blades, the shavings are graded into two fractions of different size. Of these fractions, only the fraction containing the larger shavings is subjected to a cutting chip-removal operation, whereas the fraction containing the smaller shavings is fed together with the impurities sorted during the grading, such as sand, loam and the like, to an impact chip-removal operation. In a further development of the invention, the separation of the foreign substances from the chip material is effected only after the impact chip-removal operation.
