PURPOSE:To shorten a scanning time without applying any impact to a scanner by varying the preliminary run distance of the scanner according to set magnification. CONSTITUTION:When the set magnification corresponds to reduction, a mirror base MB1 starts at a point A1 shifted according to the reduction magnification on the basis of its home position. When a motor 38 is driven to turn forward, it attains to a set feed speed V1 and a point B, then reaches a rear end E at the same speed and begins to reverse, and decrease to 0 at an overrun position F to make a return. Then, the motor attains to a return speed V3 at a point D, and is brought under reversing control at a control point C1 corresponding to the reduction magnification to stop at the point A1. When a life size mode is set, the start position of the base MB1 moves to a point A2, a feed speed V2 is obtained at the point B, and a return is made similarly at a return speed V3; and a brake is applied at a brake point C2 and the motor stops at the point A2. When an enlargement mode is set, the operation is performed similarly; the start position further moves beyond A2 and the return speed is V3 as well.
