A reciprocating piston engine having at least four strokes per cycle inducts a charge of air or fuel-air mixture into the crankcase through inlet ports. Subsequent movement of the piston compresses the charge which is then transferred to the combustion chamber for ignition and expansion. Charge transfer may be via valve controlled ducting or a valve arrangement in the piston. The engine may comprise one or more cylinders. In multi-cylinder engines each cylinder charge may be inducted and compressed in the crankcase by more than one piston.
|
