PURPOSE:To obtain an optically active (S)-gamma-halo-beta-hydroxybutyric acid ester which is an optically active compound exhibiting physiological activity, extremely economically, by the microbial asymmetric reduction of a gamma-halo-acetoacetic acid ester. CONSTITUTION:The (S)-gamma-halo-beta-hydroxybutyric acid ester of formula II is prepared by treating a gamma-halo-acetoacetic acid ester of formula I (X is halogen; R is alkyl, aryl or their substituted group) with a microbial strain capable of effecting the (S)-stereospecific asymmetric reduction of the beta-carbonyl group (preferably at yeast selected from the group of Candida genus, Debaryomyces genus, Endomyces genus, Geotricum genus, Hansenula genus, Pichia genus, Saccharomyces genus, Torulopsis genus and Trichosporon genus). |
