PURPOSE:To know the scanning position on an original accurately by providing an original reading means in a main body which is movable on the original, and engaging the original reading means with a guide member placed in relation with the original and reading the scale of the guide member. CONSTITUTION:Scattered light from the original irradiated by a light source 21 is image-formed on a linear image sensor (LIS) through a rod lens 23 and then converted into an electric signal. This converted information is stored in the main body 1 in synchronization with the scanning speed of the original 0. The scanning speed is found from the period of pulses obtained by reading the scale of a ruler A by the reflection sensor 31 of a slide part. A light- transmittable slot 11 extending lengthwise is formed at the center part of the reverse surface of the main body 1 and the original image is projected in the main body 1 through this slot 11. The LIS20 is arranged opposite this slot and the information of the original irradiated by the light source 26 is read.
