In the electric smelting furnace, especially designed as an induction furnace, having a smelting vessel which is surrounded by a coil generating a magnetic alternating field and which has a discharge device with a discharge orifice for intermittent discharge of the melt, the discharge orifice (7) is disposed in a plane above the bottom (2) of the smelting vessel (3).
