The invention relates to a method and a device for converting image and shape information items into electrical information items. The system comprises a camera and an image reader. It is characteristic of the method that the photographic information item is read out in lateral direction line by line and step by step by means of an elongated electrical line reader, the positions of the line reader, which moves along the image during the reading out of the corresponding lines, being controlled by an at least geometric, optically readable pattern which is arranged along the direction of movement of the line reader. The device for carrying out this method exhibits an elongated line reader and elements for displaying the image information item, preferably by projecting the image. The line reader can be moved along the pattern integrated in the image information item and is controlled by successive steps of the pattern in such a manner that the reading out of the image occurs step by step, subdivided into successive steps.
