NEW MATERIAL:(-)-(2R*,3S*)-2,3-Epoxy-3(4-methoxyphenyl) propionic acid (-)-alpha-methylbenzylamine salt. USE:Coronary vasodilator. It is also used as a starting compound of diltiazem hydrochloride. PREPARATION:(+ or -)-(2RS,3SR)-2,3-epoxy-3-(4-methoxyphenyl)propionic acid salt of formula II (M is alkali metal) is allowed toreact with a mineral acid salt of an optically active organic amine and the resultant diastereomer salt is resolved utilizing solubility difference to give a compound of formula I.
