PURPOSE:To liquefy coal by hydrogenation in such a manner that an excess of reaction in coal liquefaction is suppressed and making it possible to stably operate the reactor at a controlled temp. CONSTITUTION:The title liquefaction by hydrogenation is carried out in such a manner as to facilitate temp. control for the reaction, by liquefying coal 1 by hydrogenation in a state of a slurry in a medium oil 3 in the presence of a catalyst 2 (in a hydroliquefaction reactor 5, 6, 7) and supplying water 20 separated from the reaction product to the hydroliquefaction zone.
