PURPOSE:To obtain a polymer of a relatively large particle diameter and a controlled particle diameter distribution and at the same time to perform the polymerization in high activity, by polymerizing an olefin by using a supported transition metal catalyst component prepared by a specified method. CONSTITUTION:A product of contact among three compounds of component A1: a solid component formed by contacting an alcohol compound (e.g., ethanol or trimethylsilanol) with the thin surface layers of particles of a product of contact between a magnesium halide (e.g., MgC12) and an alkoxy group- containing compound of a Group I-IV metal of the periodic table (preferably, titanium or silicon compound) component A2: an organic acid ester (preferably, aliphatic or aromatic carboxylic acid ester), and component A3: a liquid titanium halide (preferably, TiC13). Said product of contact has an average particle diameter of 10-100mu, and its combination with an organometallic compound (e.g., organoaluminum compound) as a cocatalyst is used in the polymerization of an olefin (preferably, ethylene or propylene).
