An optical memory medium comprises a number of metal specks consisting of a noble metal, an alkali earth metal and/or copper and having absorption characteristics of light of a specific wavelength and a holder made of an organic compound in which the metal specks are dispersed and which consists of a substance chemically bonded to metal of the specks, wherein when the holder is irradiated with light, the bonded state of the metal and the substance of the holder is changed, so that the holder has absorption characteristics of light of a wavelength other than the specific wavelength.
