PURPOSE:To obtain the title polymer useful as an antioxidant for thermoplastic resins, by alkylating the ortho or para positions of the terminal phenolic com pound component of a phenolic polymer with a specified compound. CONSTITUTION:A phenolic polymer of formula VI is obtained by alkylating the ortho or para position of the terminal phenolic compound component of a phenolic polymer of formula III (wherein n averages 1-75), obtained by reacting 1 mol of a phenolic compound (A) of formula I (wherein R1 is a 1-5 C alkyl or alkoxy and R2-3 may be the same or different and are each H or R1) with 0.67-1.00 mol of a bis (hydroxyalkyl)-benzene compound (B) of formula II (wherein R4-9 may be the same or different and are each H or a 1-5 C alkyl) in the presence of 0.2-10wt.%, based on the weight of (A+B), alkylation catalyst with 2-5 mol, per mol of the difference between the numbers of moles of components A and B used, at least one compound selected from the compound of formula IV and V (wherein R10-15 are each any one of R4-9) in the presence of said catalyst.
