PURPOSE:To restore a hue correctly by giving an AC level reference signal, which goes to be a hue level reference, by the frequency of a carrier when the frequency is modulated by chrominance components, in the device to compress respectively a luminance signal and the chrominance components, to multiplex the time division and to modulate, record and reproduce the frequency. CONSTITUTION:A line sequential color difference signal 2d obtained by compressing a line sequential color difference signal 2b to 1/5 by the time base in the recording circuit is outputted from an LPF50. In such a case, the AC level of the line sequential color difference 2b is clamped at a clamp circuit 5 at the front step of an A/D converter 7 and it goes to be the AC level of the line sequential color difference signal 2d compressed by the time base as it is. At a clamp circuit 52, the AC level of the line sequential color difference signal 2d is clamped, and the frequency is modulated so that the AC level becomes a constant FM carrier at a frequency modulating device 56. Since the AC level can be detected by an FM carrier frequency at the time of reproduction, a C level detecting error due to a frequency characteristic deterioration, emphasis/de-emphasis characteristic error, etc., can be prevented, and a correct hue can be restored.
