PURPOSE:A low-speed electron beam excitation phosphor suitable for making a low-speed electron beam excitation flurescent display tube emitting light with high luminence under low-speed electron beam excitation, which is obtd. by incorporating Li in a (Zn, Cd) S-base phosphor. CONSTITUTION:x mol of zinc sulfide powder (wherein 0<=x<=1) is mixed with 1-x mol of cadmium sulfide powder and the mixture is mixed with a halide of a monovalent metal, such as AgCl, or a salt of a trivalent metal such as aluminum nitrate, and activator and the like. Additionally, a lithium source such as LiCl is added to the mixture and the resultant mixture is baked in a hydrogen sulfide atmosphere,etc. Thus the purpose low-speed electron beam excitation phosphor of the formula (wherein 0<a<1X10<-2>g/g; b>=0, c>=0; M<1> is Na, K, Ag, Rb, Cs, Au or Cu; X is Al, Cl, Br or I) is obtd.
