PURPOSE:To sufficiently complete gasification and to decrease the amt. of recycled char to the utmost by agglomerating ash in an upper gasification zone and dropping the ash to a lower gasification zone after prolonged retention of the particle in the upper gasification zone. CONSTITUTION:An upper gasification zone 1 is connected to a lower gasification zone 2 through a contracted zone 3 and said lower gasification zone 2 is kept in a high-temp. atmosphere higher than the m.p. of the ash in the coal and said upper gasification zone 1 is kept in an atmospher at a temp. lower than that in the lower gasification zone 2. In the apparatus, coal is gasified by the apparatus so constituted that a coal ash is agglomerated in said upper gasifica tion zone 1 and the agglomerated ash is dropped through said contracted zone 3 to said lower gasification zone 2. It is pref. to be in a range between the softening point and pour point of the coal ash produced from the feed coal.
