A process for the separation of free oil from an olefin sulphonation product containing free oil, which comprises steps for contacting the sulphonation product of one or more C8 to C24 olefins with alkane-based extraction solvent and phase separating the resulting contact mixture into an extract enriched in free oil and a raffinate enriched in sulphonated matter, characterized in that the extraction solvent comprises one or more C4 to C9 alkanes and dimethyl ketone.
