USE:It is used as a starting material of diltiazem hydrochloride, a coronary vasodilatior. PREPARATION:The esterifiction of (-)-(2R*,3R*)-2,3-epoxy-3-(4-methoxyphenyl) propionic acid salt of formula II (A<+> is the conjugate acid of the organic base, alkali metal ion gives a compound of formula I.
