The invention relates to components for detergents and cleaning agents which contain monoethylenically unsaturated mono- and dicarboxylic acids, their hydroxy alkyl esters and in the given situation other ethylenically unsaturated compounds in the form of monomer units and are characterised by a special capacity for binding to calcium and magnesium, detergents and cleaning agents containing them, their use in detergents and cleaning agents especially in the form of sequestering agents and as inhibitors of greying.
