The cpds. of formula (I), in which R is H or lower alkyl, are made by reaction of a cpd. of formula (II), in which X is a salient gp., e.g. halogen, tosylate or triphenyl phosphonio, with a cpd. of formula (III), in which Y is H or an easily-replaceable gp. in inert solvent at -5 deg.C up to b.pt., at atmos. pressure for sufficient time to complete the reaction.
