PURPOSE:To obtain PE of a low halogen content at a high rate of production, by polymerizing C2H4 or a mixture of C2H4 with 3C or higher alpha-olefins at a high temperature and a high pressure in the presence of a catalyst obtained from a specified solid catalyst component and a specified aluminoxane. CONSTITUTION:A catalyst is obtained from a solid catalyst component (i) consisting essentially of Mg, a halogen and a transition metal, obtained by contacting a Mg-containing solid obtained by treating a magnesium halide, MgO, etc., with a halogen-containing compound (e.g., aluminum halide) with a transition metal compound such as a compound of formula I or II (wherein X is a halogen, R is a 1-6C alkyl, P is a 4-7C alkyl and m and n are each 1-4), an aluminoxane (ii) obtained by reacting 1mol of an organoaluminum compound of formula III (wherein p is 0-1) with 0.5-2.5mol of water and, optionally, an electron donor (iii) in an amount of 0.05-0.5mol, per 1g atom Al in the aluminoxane. C2H4 or a mixture of C2H4 with 3C or higher alpha-olefins is polymerized at 125 deg.C or higher and a pressure >=250kg/cm<2> for an average residence time of monomer of 2-600sec.
