PURPOSE:A liquid crystal compsn. with excellent stability and suitable for a liquid crystal display, prepd. by adding a squarylium compd. obtd. by reacting a specified compd. with squaric acid in a solvent to a liquid crystal. CONSTITUTION:A compd. of the formula I (wherein R is H, alkyl, alkoxy or halogen) is reacted with squaric acid to obtain a squarylium compd. of the formula II with excellent stability and good solubility in a liquid crystal having absorption wavelength near laser beam wavelength of 600-1,100nm. Then said squarylium compd. is compounded with a liquid crystal suck as cholesteric liquid crystal which is converted into a cholesteric state by adding an optically active material such as a chiral nematic compd. to a smectic liquid crystal such as cyanooctylbiphenyl, or a nematic liquid crystal such as cyclohexylchclohexane-base one.
