PURPOSE:To produce 'SILAS' opal glass for ornament, by blending 'SILAS' of volcanic ash, fledspar, boron oxide, calcium oxide, and sodium oxide in a specific ratio, melting the blend to give oxide glass, and heat-treating it again. CONSTITUTION:10-70wt% 'SILAS' of volcanic ash soil is blended with 1-60wt% feldspar, 15-30wt% B2O3, 5-15wt% CaO, 0-10wt% Na2O, or further properly with properly metal oxides such as MnO2, SeO2, Cn2O2, NiO, CuO, CoO, TiO2, Cd2O3, V2O5, CeO2, etc. as a colorant or decoloring agent for glass, heated at 1,200-1,400 deg.C for 1-2hr, melted, and cooled to give oxide glass. The glass is heated again at 600-800 deg.C for a given time, phase separation resulting from component transfer in the glass is caused, and converted into amorphous opal state, to produce 'SILAS' opal useful thermally processed materials for ornament, tiles, etc.
