PURPOSE:To simplify the reproducing or the edit by starting the recording with the identification number which shows a chapter number that is made in a manner that the recorded identification number is read out and one is added to a previously recorded chapter number. CONSTITUTION:In a reproducing stage, the reproducing signal detected by a head 6 is separated into a video signal, a digitized sound signal, and a reproduction identification signal by an video/sound/identification signal separating and synthesizing circuit 5. The reproduction identification signal is discriminated by a system controlling circuit 1. And by the circuit 1, the display of the chapter number, the output of other information data, and the storing of the chapter number and the index number are performed. At the starting time of the recording, the previously recorded part before the starting point of recording on a tape 7 is reproduced for a specified length. And, the signal flows as in reproducing operation. The reproduction identification signal now is discriminated, and the recording is started with the chapter number that is the previously recorded chapter number added by one.
